Delavan is betting that it can. We will have more info on their newest version of Lohr equipment in Feb when they test load.

You're right, Allied has some Sterling LOHRs but Nu Car had some in 1986. First they had three Mercedes Benz units; then about ten Louisvilles. They were built at a LOHR plant here in York, PA along I83. The MBs hauled Mercedes car from the port in Baltimore to MB in Bellcamp, MD. The Ford went to haul Nissans in Smyna for a while and I have shots of them hauling Escorts also. I don't know what happened to the Fords but I shot one or two of the Benzs in Flordia in the early 1990s. It was in use by a wholesaler. LOHR also had an IH S-series tractor that they built up for Auto Convoy but I never saw the trailer or finished unit.
My friend who hauls cars in Holland visited me a few years ago. He was dumfounded at me using chain tiedowns. Their strap system also uses wheel chocks which may be what LOHR/DelaVan is going to use. For sure, we will never be able to load to the heights they load to in Europe.

They look heavy, any idea what the empty weight is on either of those?

Offhand I don't remember the EW but I may have it in a file. The upper decks of the Fords had no runways, the cars' tires were strapped in "folks". I've seen twelve Nissans or Escorts in actual loads. More photos if anyone wants to see them. Did anybody work at Smyrna in 1987-88?
The Mercedes was basically a European design built here and I don't think it was heavy. I do have two period artilcles about these.

Here's a photo of an IH that LOHR built for Auto Convoy in 1986. Never saw the trailer for this one. The rear deck has been lowered and you can see the wheel chocks stowed along the left rail. What happened to this rig?

I'd say were getting VERY close to the European way of doing things now. Look at GLOVIS, all KIA and Hyundai products are now 100% soft tie for haul away. All GM light duty and cars same way.
