I wonder if this is another Meritor axle on the recall list? The story on Metro News CANADIAN CAR HAULER FIREspecifically states the investigators are blaming an overheated wheel bearing as the cause. I happened in a remote area so the fire crew could not save the load. Speedloader sent in a link to another article about the same fire. Apparently these two trucks left a bit ahead of him out of the same terminal.

I'm hurt ! You got me confused with SMOOTHRIDE ! Unless SMOOTHRIDE works out of my rail head too. Now I'll have to figure out who he/she really is !

Actually, here's how Saturday night – early Sunday morning went down: I did a highway load Sat evening, then came back for 2 city loads. On my first city load, I blew a steel coolant line at midnight. By 3 am the service truck determined we couldn't fix it where I was so we called the big hook in for a tow. By 4am, the service truck was dropping me back at the yard for another truck. As I was pre-triping the another rig ( got that flat drive tire fixed Rob!  ), 2 trucks left the rail head loaded in front of me. A Hansens (Canada) truck, and an East Can truck (Canada-Newfoundland  http://www.eastcantrans.com/ ). Apparently, the East Can truck only got a few miles up the highway before the fire started. Ironically, that burnt out Land Rover on the last top trailer position was left behind the night before by a Thorsons truck because he couldn't make it fit in the enclosed trailer. It WAS a nice Land Rover. Oh well, Cah Cah happens. And yeah, the mechanics around the corner seem to be leaning towards yet another Meritor hub. Also ironically, I had a Meritor hub go bad in almost the exact same spot 4 years ago !! I was lucky and caught the smoke puffs in the headlights of the 4 wheeler I was passing at the time. By the time I got to the side, 1/2 mile, the hub and the axel were toast, but I got the fire out because it had only just started. The East Can burnt spot is where we loaded my load onto the another truck.

Whew – some weekend this turned out to be.

My apologies to both of you, I got you mixed up. I'm over 50 and they say it is all down hill form here!

I hope you don't have too many more nights like Sat night. At least you weren't the one watching the fire department put out your smoldering tuck!

Ya know, now that I think about it, all my greatest Car Haul mis-adventures have happened on Sat night. 3 years ago I had a truck catch fire about 7 miles south of the middle of nowhere on a lonely Sat night. What was that earlier post made by somone called 'Writerguy' about us telling stories ??? I might have to drop him a line when things slow down a bit.
