360.com is reporting on a high mount car carrier that got stuck onĀ the tracks in Odessa. Looks to me like there is some considerable damage to the truck in position one that was done by the tow truck's lifting technique. Would his underlift not go high enough to lift it by the hitch pin?

Hard to say. No doubt the big hook could have lifted it better. But I, like you Dave, have been under preasure before to do what had to be done to re-open the road, or rail road for traffic ASAP. I've got some real nasty stories stored away about stuff like that.
